How Do I Reduce the Size of a File?

In some instances your file might be unnecessarily large and reducing it will improve the ability and speed at which the assignment is graded.

If your file size exceeds 2 MB, which might be causing a submission error, use these tips to review your file and see if there are any opportunities to reduce the file size.

  1. Check your file for many images
    • A file with excessive images can get to be quite large
    • If there are images that are not a graded element, consider removing them
  2. Check for duplicate images or charts
    • Sometimes, an image or chart gets duplicated on top of itself many times, unnecessarily increasing the file size
    • Click on any images and charts and drag them over just a bit to see if a duplicate is hiding underneath
    • If so, delete all of the duplicates

  3. Check your file for a 3D model
    • 3D Models typically have an icon of two arrows creating a sphere on them3d model icon
    • If a 3D model is not a required element of the graded file, we recommend deleting it. Your file size will be dramatically reduced

  4. Check for a formula that was accidentally filled to the bottom of the spreadsheet rather than the bottom of a range

  5. You can quickly highlight the extra cells with the formula by selecting the first unnecessary cell, using the shortcut keys Ctrl + Shift + Down Arrow, which will highlight the remainder of the column, and then pressing Delete
